This Week In Books (May 4th 2016)

thisweekinbooks

This Week In Books is a weekly update on what you’ve been reading hosted by Lipsyy Lost & Found .

∧ Then ∧

The fourteen day soul detox

I am almost thanking my health issues for helping me read so much in the past week. “Almost” only because it allowed me to read, but I could not gather enough energy to write reviews, which means I need to clear the backlog again. Still, 4 books in a week is a record for me!

~ The Maze Runner, James Dashner

Why so much hate about this book? Expect praise for the book and a big rant on the movie once I am done struggling with the review!

~ Fearless Fourteen, Janet Evanovich

Blurb:
Personal vendettas, hidden treasure, and a monkey named Carl will send bounty hunter Stephanie Plum on her most explosive adventure yet.

As a result of bad health and bad luck, I had to retrieve my Stephanie Plum story from my secret stash. As a result of me flying through the book, I need to buy a new one so I don’t find myself without a story when I need it.

~ The Reflections of Queen Snow White, David Meredith

I happily announce this book did not disappoint me. Surprised me? Yes. Definitely. Okay, it was not difficult because I did not know what to expect, but still, making a girl like me enjoy anything related to fairy-tales is an exploit. It even inspired me for my previous post. The review is on its way.

~ The Fourteen Day Soul Detox, Rita Stradling

Blurb:
In the next fourteen days, I plan to:
Body
1) Cut back on my coffee intake.
2) Gain some of my weight back.
3) Start getting some exercise again (aside from having sex with Cameron). Yoga? I don’t know.
4) Sleep.
Mind
5) Take on my daughter’s school board.
6) Sell my coffee shop.
7) Go on a date with that hunky single dad from my daughter’s school.
Soul
8) Stop wearing my wedding ring.
9) Spread my husband’s ashes.
10) Forgive the woman who killed him.
11) Stop sleeping with her ex-husband.
12) Remember what love feels like.
13) Be happy.

This was absolutely not on my schedule. I was checking my twitter feed when a tweet appeared to let people know the book was available on NetGalley. I liked the title. I read it in one sitting. I am happy I did it. I was much less happy when I realized the book was the first in a series. I will remember to check this next time I pick something on the spur of the moment.

≈ Now ≈ The Sister, Louise Jensen

The sister

Blurb:
“I did something terrible Grace. I hope you can forgive me …”
Grace hasn’t been the same since the death of her best friend Charlie. She is haunted by Charlie’s words, the last time she saw her, and in a bid for answers, opens an old memory box of Charlie’s. It soon becomes clear there was a lot she didn’t know about her best friend.
When Grace starts a campaign to find Charlie’s father, Anna, a girl claiming to be Charlie’s sister steps forward. For Grace, finding Anna is like finding a new family, and soon Anna has made herself very comfortable in Grace and boyfriend Dan’s home.
But something isn’t right. Things disappear, Dan’s acting strangely and Grace is sure that someone is following her. Is it all in Grace’s mind? Or as she gets closer to discovering the truth about both Charlie and Anna, is Grace in terrible danger?
There was nothing she could have done to save Charlie …or was there?
A compelling, gripping psychological thriller.

Psychological thrillers are among my favorite genres so I am very excited to start The Sister today. Read that blurb and tell me you are not curious!

∨ Next ∨ Black Widow, Christopher Brookmyre

Black Widow

Blurb:
Diana Jager is clever, strong and successful, a skilled surgeon and fierce campaigner via her blog about sexism. Yet it takes only hours for her life to crumble when her personal details are released on the internet as revenge for her writing.
Then she meets Peter. He’s kind, generous, and knows nothing about her past: the second chance she’s been waiting for. Within six months, they are married. Within six more, Peter is dead in a road accident, a nightmare end to their fairytale romance. But Peter’s sister Lucy doesn’t believe in fairytales, and tasks maverick reporter Jack Parlabane with discovering the dark truth behind the woman the media is calling Black Widow…

Black Widow was not supposed to be read so early, but a comment by Linda @ crimeworm.wordpress.com convinced me to bump it up to the top of my TBR list.

What are you reading this week? 🙂

    1. Never, ever, never watch the movie if you can avoid it. I spent two hours yelling at the screen at every liberty they took compared to the original story. Some things were just details, but others were so big I just couldn’t believe it or understand why they’d chosen to make such changes. I’ll stop now, I feel the anger building up again!
Thank you for the link, I’ll check your post now! 🙂

  1. I’m so pleased that Queen Snow White didn’t disappoint – I’m definitely going to add it to my wishlist now! I’ve not read a Stephanie Plum book in a while now but I always loved reading her adventures, I must try and catch up with the series soon. I’ve got The Sisters on my review TBR too and can’t wait to read it, it’s a very intriguing blurb – I hope you enjoy it.

    1. You can add it, it is worth reading 🙂 I’d love to read your thoughts about it. I am slowly making my way up to the last Stephanie Plum published. I don’t want to think about the day I will have to wait for a new release. Thank you for the link, I’ll check your post now!

      1. I will do then 🙂 I dread catching up with long series that I’ve loved and then having to wait who knows how long for the next book. I’ve also enjoyed the Sue Grafton alphabet series and that’s so close to the end now and I’m dreading the point of knowing there will be no more books ever.

  2. I really want to get to The Sisters, it just sounds so amazing. As for The Maze Runner…well, I haven’t read the book or watched the movie. I have heard so many mixed things that I just keep passing it by. I haven’t read any Janet Evanovich books either, but I see a lot of them every time I go to my local thrift shop. I think you might be the first person that I seen post something about them. Are they all good or is it just certain ones? Happy reading 🙂

    1. Yes, I’m very excited about The Sisters. Unfortunately, I have to work before starting my reading. For The Maze Runner, I’d advice you to read it instead of watching it if you ever find the time. The movie in itself is not bad but the story is so much better in the book. I have yet to find a Janet Evanovich I did not enjoy. They’re full of humor and weird situations, hot guys and action. Of course, I have only read the Stephanie Plum series so I can’t talk about her other works. But I really really love them and Stephanie is such a great character. Of course, after 14 books, it is hard to maintain lots of originality, but I still appreciate them a lot. The characters are all awesome so it offsets any repetition plot-wise.

  3. The Sister sounds really intriguing. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it!
I’m reading so many books at the moment haha! I’m more than halfway through The Leaving Season by Cat Jordan and really enjoying it so far, and I’m also reading The Star-Touched Queen, My Life Next Door, and another book for school.

  4. The most important problem I had with The Maze Runner was the annoying ‘slang’ and the lack of character development, but I know a lot of people seem to love the series… It’s good to hear you are one of them. 🙂 And The Sister sounds like a really interesting read. Happy reading!

    1. I had read some really bad things about The Maze Runner so I was leery of starting it but I’m happy it turned out to be a great read for me 🙂 I tend to be on the unpopular side of opinions these days, haha. Thank you, happy reading to you too!

    1. Thank you 🙂 I’m slowly recovering, but my brain is not happy to have to work on all the reviews I need to write now that the reading paradise is over!

  5. The Sisters and Black Widow sound like my kind of books. I have been reading a lot of psychological thrillers lately. I will definitely add the two to my TBR list. I watched Maze Runner but haven’t read the book. I look forward to reading your rant about it. Honestly, at first I thought that was your schedule. The exercise bit made me smile haha

Sorry to hear that you have been unwell. I hope that you are getting better now. Quick recovery and happy reading.
