This Week In Books (24 April 2019)

Long time no see! I can’t believe my last TWIB was in February!

This Week In Books is a weekly update on what you’ve been reading hosted by Lipsyy Lost & Found . A similar meme is hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words.

∧ Then ∧ Fallen Angel by Chris Brookmyre

fallen angel

To new nanny Amanda, the Temple family seem to have it all: the former actress; the famous professor; their three successful grown-up children. But like any family, beneath the smiles and hugs there lurks far darker emotions.

Sixteen years earlier, little Niamh Temple died while they were on holiday in Portugal. Now, as Amanda joins the family for a reunion at their seaside villa, she begins to suspect one of them might be hiding something terrible…

And suspicion is a dangerous thing.

It’s always, always, ALWAYS, a pleasure to read anything by Chris Brookmyre!

≈ Now ≈ Only Ever You by Rebecca Drake / Perfect Crime by Helen Fields

only ever you

Three-year-old Sophia Lassiter disappears at the playground only to return after 40 frantic minutes– but her mother Jill’s relief is short lived. Jill is convinced the tiny dots on her daughter’s arm are puncture marks. When doctors find no trace of drugs in her system, Jill accepts she won’t ever know what happened during her daughter’s absence and is simply grateful to have her home safely.

Except Sophia isn’t safe. Three months later, she disappears again. This time from her bed at home, in the night. Working with the police and the community, Jill and her husband David are desperate to bring their little girl home. They remain hopeful—until information turns up suggesting their daughter was murdered, causing the police to turn their suspicions on the parents. Facing ugly family secrets and heart-rending evidence, Jill is still convinced her daughter is alive. But when the dragnet begins to close around them, Jill realizes the worst: if the police believe she has killed her daughter, that means they aren’t out there looking for the real perpetrator. They aren’t hunting for Sophie or the person who still has her.

This audiobook is so good I keep making the dogs’ walks longer and longer to listen to more chapters!

perfect crime

Stephen Berry is about to jump off a bridge until a suicide prevention counsellor stops him. A week later, Stephen is dead. Found at the bottom of a cliff, DI Luc Callanach and DCI Ava Turner are drafted in to investigate whether he jumped or whether he was pushed…

As they dig deeper, more would-be suicides roll in: a woman found dead in a bath; a man violently electrocuted. But these are carefully curated deaths – nothing like the impulsive suicide attempts they’ve been made out to be.

Little do Callanach and Turner know how close their perpetrator is as, across Edinburgh, a violent and psychopathic killer gains more confidence with every life he takes…

I had been waiting for this forever!!!!!

  1. Such a great www, they all look amazing! I’m also so jealous you got a copy of Fallen Angel! And you’re so lucky you’re one of the 50 bloggers to receive a proof copy of The Wayward Girls. At least I have an ecopy of that one :-)! I have high expectations of that one too ;-). Happy reading lovely!

  2. I have Perfect Crime on my TBR, I look forward to your review. I didn’t know that Chris has another book out, sounds like it was a great read. Definitely adding it. Enjoy your books this week. Happy reading 🙂

  3. I finished “Murder Games” by Caroline Mitchell last night – review’s gone up today. Haven’t quite decided what to read next – although as you know I’m thinking of going with “In Bitter Chill” by Sarah Ward.

  4. I’ve never read any Chris Brookmyre but Fallen Angel sounds like my kind of book so I might treat myself to this one. You’ve reminded me that I got the Rebecca Drake book for Christmas the year before last so now I know how good it is I must find it and move it up my TBR mountain. It sounds like the audio book is addictive! I hope the books you plan on reading in the coming days are just as good! Happy reading!
    Here’s my post:

    1. Oooh, you MUST read Chris’s books! I recommend Black Widow, because it was my first and I still remember it as if I’d read it last night. Fallen Angel is amazing too! In fact, he’s a fabulous writer, so you can pick any of his books, haha!
Only Ever You surprised me, really! I wasn’t expecting to become addicted to the narration!
      Happy reading! xx

  5. I can’t wait to read Perfect Crime, looking forward to reading your thoughts. I’m currently reading Never Be Broken by Sarah Hilary and I will be starting Hunting Evil by Chris Carter.
