I couldn’t be happier to start the weekend with this review! Can you believe I am about to talk about the seventh book in the Kay Hunter series? You can’t see it but I’m excited as a bee and my cheeks hurt from smiling.

I am in love with Kay Hunter. So when Rachel Amphlett sent THE email containing the seventh book in the series, I couldn’t hold my happiness. I started blabbering and my mom had to shut me up with a piece of cake directly in the mouth! Yep. I had Kay and cake. My day was made.

Then I opened the Kindle and thought ‘What if she’s changed?’ Bur this was silly. Because I have come to think of Kay as a friend. A cop friend with a lovely man, a great team, and long work hours. Has Kay changed over the course of those seven books? Yes. Events, words, injuries, so many things have happened to her, bringing out the best of this character, making her the most authentic woman, the fabulously human and realistic wife, friend, boss, colleague… I love watching her grow.

Bridge To Burn gave me the opportunity to once again delve deeper into Kay Hunter’s world, her insecurities, her strength. The familiar and fantastic writing is soothing, comforting, no matter if it describes the new pet brought home by Adam or the latest killing the police have to deal with. Rachel Amphlett hasn’t let time weaken the Kay Hunter series. Oh no. She just keeps adding layers of awesomeness.

Do I sound like a complete fan? I hope so!

Okay, a bit more about the novel itself!

A mummified body! Ah! The opening grabbed me with dusty hands and I ‘yikes’d! Then curiosity took over and I read Bridge To Burn in one sitting. I’ve learned the hard way that business is business and no dead body will change this. But Kay’s determination overcomes the shadiest guys in town and as I cheered on the cop and her team, I was reminded of the lies and the price people pay for appearances. The human mind is a dark place at times and everyone has skeletons in their closets. Here, we’ve got one in a very peculiar place, but the result is the same. A lesson about how every choice, every row, every decision make us who we are and have consequences on those around us.

Those consequences also reach Kay in her personal life, as tragedy strikes not only through the precinct but also within her family, leaving the reader wishing they could hug Kay (at least I know I wanted it so much!!!) No loud drama, just life reminding people that they don’t hold the cards. I am in awe of how the author always keeps going back to events from the past, reminding us of their effect on the characters. One thing I hate in TV shows and some book series is how something major happens and one or two books later, it’s completely forgotten. No references are made. Nothing. Just nothing. We don’t get this with Kay. We get the full package, never maudlin, always emotionally spot-on, accurate and perfectly life-like.

Bridge To Burn is another stunner from Rachel Amphlett, my highly anticipated new door to Kay Hunter’s world. A fascinating and compelling addition to one of the best crime series around!
