#OrendaMonth This Week in Books (March 22nd 2017)

thisweekinbooks

This Week In Books is a weekly update on what you’ve been reading hosted by Lipsyy Lost & Found . A similar meme is hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words.

∧ Then ∧ The Abrupt Physics of Dying, Paul E. Hardisty

the abrupt physics of dying

Claymore Straker is trying to forget a violent past. Working as an oil company engineer in the wilds of Yemen, he is hijacked at gunpoint by Islamic terrorists. Clay has a choice: help uncover the cause of a mysterious sickness afflicting the village of Al Urush, close to the company’s oil-processing facility, or watch Abdulkader, his driver and close friend, die. As the country descends into civil war and village children start dying, Clay finds himself caught up in a ruthless struggle between opposing armies, controllers of the country’s oil wealth, Yemen’s shadowy secret service, and rival terrorist factions. As Clay scrambles to keep his friend alive, he meets Rania, a troubled journalist. Together, they try to uncover the truth about Al Urush. But nothing in this ancient, unforgiving place is as it seems. Accused of a murder he did not commit, put on the CIA’s most-wanted list, Clay must come to terms with his past and confront the powerful forces that want him dead. A stunning debut eco-thriller, The Abrupt Physics of Dying is largely based on true events – the horrific destruction of fresh water and lives by oil giants. Gritty, gripping and shocking, this book will not only open your eyes but keep them glued to the page until the final, stunning denouement is reached.

Wow. Just wow. More about it when I have recovered!

≈ Now ≈ The Defenceless, Kati Hiekkapelto (translated by David Hackston)

When an old man is found dead on the road—seemingly run over by a Hungarian au pair—police investigator Anna Fekete is certain that there is more to the incident than meets the eye. As she begins to unravel an increasingly complex case, she’s led on a deadly trail where illegal immigration, drugs, and, ultimately, murder threaten not only her beliefs, but her life. Anna’s partner Esko is entrenched in a separate but equally dangerous investigation into the activities of an immigrant gang, where deportation orders and raids cause increasing tension and result in desperate measures by gang members—and the police themselves. Then a bloody knife is found in the snow, and the two cases come together in ways that no one could have predicted. As pressure mounts, it becomes clear that having the law on their side may not be enough for Anna and Esko.

∨ Next ∨ The Bird Tribunal, Agnes Ravatn (tanslated by Rosie Hedger)

Two people in exile. Two secrets. As the past tightens its grip, there may be no escape… TV presenter Allis Hagtorn leaves her partner and her job to take voluntary exile in a remote house on an isolated fjord. But her new job as housekeeper and gardener is not all that it seems, and her silent, surly employer, 44-year-old Sigurd Bagge, is not the old man she expected. As they await the return of his wife from her travels, their silent, uneasy encounters develop into a chilling, obsessive relationship, and it becomes clear that atonement for past sins may not be enough… Haunting, consuming and powerful, The Bird Tribunal is a taut, exquisitely written psychological thriller that builds to a shocking, dramatic crescendo that will leave you breathless.

Here is this week’s Orenda choices! Both books sound awesome… as they all do. March is one of the best reading months I’ve ever had!

What’s on your reading list this week? Happy reading!

    1. I have Wicked Games by Matt and I am so so bumped I won’t be able to review it in time, but I have like too many posts and too little days left in the Orenda Month to squeeze the review in 😦 I think I’m never ending the Orenda reviews, hahaha, I’m gonna keep getting the books coming anyway! I am very excited about The Bird Tribunal, I’ve heard so much about it! xxx

    1. Thank you! 🙂 I am a bit sad to see it end soon, and I haven’t been able to squeeze in as many books as I wanted, but I am planning on enjoying March until the very end and keep the Orenda love coming anyway all year long! xxx

    1. The Abrupt Physics of Dying left me speechless! It’s not a genre I usually go to, either in books or movies, so to have enjoyed so much action surprises me 😀 I’ve been lucky to read so many awesome things this month! xx

          1. It was actually Trafalgar Square Publishing (they publish UK books in the US and Canada), but my requests were denied… Still going to get the copies at some point though.
