So Marshie has decided to jump on the adult-blogger pool and created his very own tag! What’s your favorite genre?

I’d give everything up for my psychological thrillers.

Who is your favorite author from the genre?

I’m not comfortable stating there is ONE favorite author. I don’t read enough series to say there’s one author that gets me every time. If The Fire Child had been as good as The Ice Twins, I might have answered S.K. Tremayne, but I learned the hard way that one brilliant book from an author doesn’t guarantee success all the way. Instead I’ll give you a few names that for me nailed the psychological thriller genre:

Louise Jensen, Michael J. Malone, Camilla Grebe, Chris Brookmyre.

What is it about the genre that keeps you pulling back?

The thrill. The deep troubles of the mind. The question of how far can someone go and how deep can someone fall. The intricate plots, the unreliable characters, the atmosphere. The idea of reading to try and understand what people are capable of.

What’s the book that started your love for your favorite genre?

Do you want the short story or the long story? As we’re all readers here, I’ll go with the long (and boring) story. A long long time ago (10 years ago), far far away (800km from where I am now) lived a lonely but gorgeous (what? They say you should compliment yourself daily, I’m just following the advice) teenager who stumbled upon her very first Kay Scarpetta book. This teenager became fascinated with the crime aspect, the forensics, but most of all, with the motivation behind the killer’s actions. One might argue this book was more of a crime than a psychological thriller, but the teenager would reply it is her story and she is the one to decide what’s what.
Years later (11 months ago for you), clicking from a Scarpetta novel’s page to a recommended book on Goodreads, she discovered psychological thrillers and fine-tuned her favorite genre.

If you had to recommend at least one book from your favorite genre to a non-reader/someone looking to start reading the genre, what would you choose and why?

Because the writing is good, because twins are fascinating, because the characters are likeable and easy to relate to, because it’s gripping and surprising, and because it gives you a taste of what psychological thrillers look like at their best without the intimidating feeling of being too intricate for beginners.

Why do you read?

I read to live lives I wouldn’t normally experience. I read to meet characters and fill my head and heart with faces and memories, I read to feel emotions, I read to question myself, my beliefs and the world around me. I read to open my mind. I read for fun. I read to escape reality. I read to fathom the unfathomable. I read to give my hours a meaning. I read to find solace. I read because I want to.

Some people assume you read because you don’t know what else to do, because you’re bored. This makes me so angry I would throw a book to their head if books weren’t so precious to me. Yes, we all try to get rid of boredom and fill our hours with interesting things to do, but is it so hard to believe one can choose to read because they actually want to, not just because it’s the only thing you can do when you’re stuck on a waiting room?
