This Week In Books (July 20th 2016)

thisweekinbooks

This Week In Books is a weekly update on what you’ve been reading hosted by Lipsyy Lost & Found . A similar meme is hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words.

I am back! Well, part time only, but a little is better than none. I have a few posts scheduled, but more importantly, I finally have time to read and comment on your posts. You can’t see it but I am doing a little happy dance with a waffle. Thank you so much for the lovely messages I received while I was away, it cheered me up more than any candy or cake could have. Here’s a round of virtual hugs and a cold breeze to survive this sweltering heat.

Now back to business!

∧ Then ∧ The Summer That Melted Everything, Tiffany McDaniel

the summer that melted everything

My lips are sealed. Until tomorrow. You’ll know all about it in the review. Okay, here’s a teaser: get that book! It will make you go through a whole range of emotions, and think. Not just the “what am I going to order for dinner tonight?”. The real thinking. The one that matters.  Don’t be afraid about the heat melting your brain, the characters are trapped in the heat, too. It can only bring you closer to the story. Make sure to have ice cream, though.

≈ Now ≈ Boyfriend By The Book, Laura Briggs

Boyfriend by the book

Jodi Nichols isn’t the most romantic girl on the planet. She doesn’t get mushy over fictional love stories, or picture herself getting swept away by a handsome hero. She’s much too grounded in reality—and much too busy working as a concierge at the luxurious Regent hotel. Helping customers is Jodi’s passion in life, and while romance may be on the back burner for now, she is nursing a little crush on Levi, the cute and friendly deliveryman for the hotel packages. And unless she’s imagining things, Levi feels the same way about her.

But Jodi’s friends think she’s turning into a lonely workaholic. They try to fix her love life, buying her a copy of the bestselling relationship guide that claims women can find true love by channeling the wisdom of famous storybook heroines. Jodi thinks it sounds crazy—no way is she acting like Jane Eyre or Lizzie Bennet to find a man! But when Levi suddenly grows distant and Jodi’s chances with him seem to fizzle before her eyes, she wonders if her friends might have a point after all. Disheartened and lonely, she decides to give the so-called relationship guide a whirl, with unexpected consequences.

Before you can say ‘Pride and Prejudice’, Jodi is up to her neck in handsome, brooding men that seem too much like fictional heroes to be true. Her attempts to think like the greatest heroines in romance lead her to meet everything from a modern Mr. Rochester to an angsty Heathcliff, and even a Darcy-esque novelist. But when a former crush re-enters her life in the form of a modern day Romeo, Jodi wonders if there might be something to this ‘inner heroine’ thing after all. Now, if she could just stop thinking about Levi, then maybe her happy-ever-after will fall into place…or is something still missing from Jodi’s storybook romance?

Boyfriend by the Book is a perfect feel good read for curling up with on a rainy day or a summer afternoon, with lots of laughs and surprises to keep the reader turning pages!

In dire need of some uncomplicated and fun reads, I agreed to review this book. I found the idea of taking example from the greatest heroines in romance to find your man so original that I had to know more about it. We do have a lot to learn from those ladies, but are today’s guys worth of the try? Last time I checked the dating scene, they weren’t! Where do the good guys hide?

my husband's son

I waited a little for the fuss to wear off to be able to fully enjoy this thriller. I have mixed feelings about the last one I read so I hope My Husband’s Son will remind me why this genre is my favorite.

Have you read any of these books? What are you reading this week?:)

  1. Well, these all sound interesting. I’m curious what that happy dance with a waffle looks like. 😂 I’m imaging you running around your kitchen with waffles and I’m dying. LMAO. I want a waffle damn it! I’m hungry. I’m reading The Song of Achilles. Girl, if you haven’t started this book yet for next week, you have to get on top of it. It’s sooo good. I’m hooked. It’s super addicting. Finally a book of the month I love. Yay! 😊 I also agreed to take on 3 indie books this week. One is a psychological CIA type thriller that sounds good, a fantasy with dragons and magic that Drew read and loved, and a short international romance that’s less than 200 pages, so I should be able to read that quick. Anyways, I’m rambling. And you’re back! Yay! 😘

    1. Your imagination is not far from the truth 😂 I call this my morning sport. I’m dancing with my hot waffles burning my poor little hands before throwing them quite violently on the plates. I sure look completely nuts :p but hey, it’s the morning, and usually I haven’t had my tea yet, so I can’t be held responsible! Did you try the waffles recipe yet?
Og, dang it!! I completely forgot that book. So now I have 5 books to read in 10 days. I’ll buy it later today and pray it arrives quickly! YOU FINALLY LIKE A BOOK OF THE MONTH. Champagne! Everyone stop what you’re doing, A MIRACLE HAPPENED xD Ooooh, a thrilller! Me lovey! Jilly busy! Let’s bury our heads into our books now 😀 xxx

      1. You cook waffles every morning? I need to come over to your house. I’m lucky if I remember to eat a slice of toast with my coffee. No, I still need to try your waffles. I hardly ever cook. Yeah, I love the book. It’s amazing! You will love it. The other people who’ve started reading it or have read it also liked it. Haha! Yeah, it’s a miracle! 🙂

        1. My couch is yours 😀 I love my bread and nutella combo but I often make waffles in the morning when I have the time. There’s no better way to start the day than with rum. I should have the book by the end of the week, so I’ll make it my weekend read. I need to start using a calendar to organize my choices better!

              1. Now that I’m awake I can comment. I woke up for a few minutes and saw your comment and fell asleep with the phone in my hand. I’ve been going to bed earlier than I used to. Ha! Yeah, crazy girls who like Nutella are my specialty. The last time we stayed overnight at the casino she had waffles with Nutella and some kind of sauce for breakfast. And she’s a tea drinker. Massive tea drinker. She has to buy all these foofy teas from a special store. She always tells me she wants to live in France so it makes sense now. 🙂 Good idea because you will love The Song of Achilles. I’ll be done reading it by the end of the day. It’s so good and I’m not even up to their deaths yet. It’s written so beautifully. 🙂

    1. Thank you!! It feels so good to see those little WP notifications, I keep smiling at my phone, my family wants to throw me into an asylum, haha. That book is just wow. The writing blew my mind. I’m putting the final touches to my review, and I can’t decide which quote to pick, they’re all too good.

    1. Thank you!! 🙂 It feels great to be back. No more time to be bored! It was The Stepmother. The more I think about it, the more disappointed I feel about the last 20% of the book.

      1. Ohh, I didn’t read that one. But I’m always more prone to love a book that wasn’t that great but ended brilliantly that viceversa :/

        1. Same for me. If I get to the end, it’s because something kept me reading, and when the ending makes up for the lack of consistency in the rest of the book, I’m okay with it. But when the final chapters are a disappointment, it’s all I remember from the story and I just feel I was kinda cheated.

Indeed, the release date is perfect. I feel I’ve been transported to Ohio again. I felt for the town when I was reading about the heat, and now I’m experiencing it. I can’t wait for Autumn to come! The read is totally worth it, I’ll make sure my review does its best to convince you, haha!

I have been postponing my review of The Stepmother because I can’t make up my mind about the rating, haha!
I am really happy The Summer That Melted Everything is getting some popularity because it deserves it.

  4. Some great sounding books on your list this week. I think all will probably be making their way over to my TBR but I particularly like the sound of Boyfriend by the Book as if done well it’s the type of story I love.

  5. Your description kind of makes me want to stop writing pending reviews and just continue reading The Summer That Melted Everything haha. I’m not sure about eating ice cream because it’s currently freezing down here, but I definitely agree that this book is great so far. My Husband’s Son sounds great as well; I hope you’ll enjoy it! Happy reading. 😀
