This Week In Books is a weekly update on what you’ve been reading hosted by Lipsyy Lost & Found . A similar meme is hosted by Sam @ Taking on a World of Words.
∧ Then ∧ The Stepmother, Claire Seeber
The perfect wife. A fairytale family. Don’t believe your eyes…
Jeanie and Matthew are a happily married couple who both have teenage children from previous relationships.
No one said it would be easy to raise a blended family under one roof but Jeanie and Matthew are strong. They will make it work.
And whilst Jeanie’s step-daughter Scarlett rejects her, Jeanie will just have to try harder to win her over.
But Jeanie has a past. A terrible secret she thought she’d buried a long time ago. And now, it’s coming to the surface, threatening to destroy her new marriage.
Someone is playing a terrifying game on Jeanie and she must put a stop to it once and for all.
After all, a fairytale needs a happy ending … doesn’t it?
I was very curious about the author’s take on a blended family. I expected a thousand things but Claire Seeber surprised me. Review to come soon.
≈ Now ≈ The Summer That Melted Everything, Tiffany McDaniel
Fielding Bliss has never forgotten the summer of 1984: the year a heat wave scorched Breathed, Ohio. The year he became friends with the devil.
Sal seems to appear out of nowhere – a bruised and tattered thirteen-year-old boy claiming to be the devil himself answering an invitation. Fielding Bliss, the son of a local prosecutor, brings him home where he’s welcomed into the Bliss family, assuming he’s a runaway from a nearby farm town.
When word spreads that the devil has come to Breathed, not everyone is happy to welcome this self-proclaimed fallen angel. Murmurs follow him and tensions rise, along with the temperatures as an unbearable heat wave rolls into town right along with him. As strange accidents start to occur, riled by the feverish heat, some in the town start to believe that Sal is exactly who he claims to be. While the Bliss family wrestles with their own personal demons, a fanatic drives the town to the brink of a catastrophe that will change this sleepy Ohio backwater forever.
This book belongs to the ones you take your time to read in order to fully appreciate the writing. If I say anything more, I know I won’t stop babbling, so you’ll have to wait for the review to know more about it!
Heir of Fire, Sarah J. Maas
Celaena has survived deadly contests and shattering heartbreak―but at an unspeakable cost. Now, she must travel to a new land to confront her darkest truth . . . a truth about her heritage that could change her life―and her future―forever.
Meanwhile, brutal and monstrous forces are gathering on the horizon, intent on enslaving her world. Will Celaena find the strength to not only fight her inner demons, but to take on the evil that is about to be unleashed?
New book, new buddy reading time! Flo @ Flowless Books and I are having a good time disagreeing on Celaena. I also finally found a character I really like, let’s hope the author doesn’t kill her or worse, turn her into a lady too.
∨ Next ∨ The Real Book Thief Ingrid Black
In October 2015, crime writer Ingrid Black discovered that her first novel The Dead, the story of a former FBI agent tracking down a serial killer in Dublin, had been plagiarised and was being sold under a different name by another author on Kindle.
The thief’s name was Joanne Clancy, a former Kindle All Star, and the book that she called Tear Drop was No 1 in the Irish crime fiction charts at the time. Not only that, but she had a second book scheduled for release in a few weeks time, and that one turned out to be a carbon copy of Ingrid Black’s second book about the same character, The Dark Eye. The Real Book Thief tells the story of how Ingrid Black discovered what had happened and how she went about trying to find out more about the mysterious woman who had stolen her work.
This week’s events have reminded me this book was on my Kindle (I must find a way to keep better track of the books I own!) I felt very unsettled when I received an email informing me the first blog tour I had signed up for might be cancelled because of suspicions of plagiarism. I don’t know what is going to happen, but I figured it was the right time to read The Real Book Thief.
Have you read any of these books? What are you reading this week?
Do share in the comments!
Happy reading!
I loved The Stepmother looking forward to seeing your thoughts on this one. That’s a shame that your first blog tour has been ruined, I deleted my review and blog tour post regarding the book as I felt it wasn’t appropriate to leave it on my blog. X

I really need to catch up on reviews soon! 🙂 There were some very good elements in The Stepmother. I’m sorry you had to delete your review, you won’t get back those hours working one this book. xx

I must admit I deleted the cover reveal from my blog too. I was going to be on the September blog tour, just glad I hadn’t read it yet or put any more time into it. Shame for those that have!
Very appropriate time to read that book Donna! Shall look forward to your thoughts on that one 🙂

I feel terrible for the bloggers who had already devoted time to this book. It came to me as a shock because I naively thought this kind of things were far away from us. Silly me. The only good thing that came out of it was the reminder I had material to read on the issue 🙂
Thank you for the link, I’ll head over to your post now!

Please tell me the character you really like in Heir of Fire is one of the witches! 🙂 I really like Manon and her second (whose name escapes me right now…) and they basically saved this book from being a failure for me.
I read 24 Hours by Claire Seeber and wasn’t overly impressed. The writing was good but the characters were in no way sympathetic. I hope you have a better experience of The Stepmother.

Haha, I do like Manon. It was a good idea to add new blood to the story. But I was talking about Sorscha 🙂 I don’t know why I warmed up to the nice and cute healer right from the start. Maybe I was just happy that Dorian had something else to do outside of his issues with Chaol and Celaena.
I have a few issues with The Stepmother, that is why my review is on hold. There were some things I really liked, but the big revelation was not what I expected, and at times I couldn’t understand the main character. I can’t decide how much I liked it. Probably not as much as I wanted. Once my thoughts are in order, I’ll make sure to write about it!
I was about to check your post but you were faster than me! 🙂 I’ll go now

It is intriguing 🙂 But the more I think about it, the less I am sure about how much I like it. That’s a very weird feeling! I haven’t finished The Summer That Melted Everything yet but what a ride! The writing is just brilliant.
Thank you for the link, I’ll check it now! 🙂

Yep, for me the surprise was not a good thing. I can’t say I did not like it, but it was just good.

I started reading the Stepmother yesterday, slow start but the book seems to have some good reviews so I will definitely give it a try. The Real Book Thief does seem interesting.Happy reading.

Ohh, I heard about that plagiarism scandal and I am so glad I didn’t sign up for that tour. I wonder how anyone even have the balls to do such thing. Are they not aware of the risk they are taking???
Anyway, The Real Book Thief is really appropriate title, even though I’m not sure what to think about it bc it reminds me so much of that ultra popular book! Classic if you ask me! 😛
And I was just leaving comment on another blog how I’m seeing The Step Mother everywhere lately and here it is again, on your blog!
I’m looking forward to see your review too! 🙂
