List #1 : What Keeps Me From Posting More Regularly

Around 3am last night, I was looking for a distraction from my usual flow of middle-of-the-night thoughts when my mind reminded me I had missed my usual Wednesday night blogging party.

Oh dread, Oh infamy!

My sacred weeknight had been sacrificed. My precious time devoted to writing posts and commenting on the hundred WWW/This Week In Books memes had been stolen from me.

To recover from this incredible and shocking news, I listed all the reasons I don’t post as much as I wish I would, especially these days.

List #1What gets in the way ofyour blogging life_

#1 Dogs

Have you ever tried writing a review when your baby dog is making those sad and imploring eyes while slowly sending her ball your way? Or get some reading done when your mom’s dog shoves the book out of the way to sleep on your lap?

yuki and iris

#2 Books

Whoo, you’re happy you have your own blog, and you can’t wait to discuss that character’s habit to eat her hair, or rant about the fact that author killed your book boyfriend. But before you can do all of this, you need to actually READ BOOKS. What is the point of a book blog if you have no material to discuss?

#3 Life

Life loves sending unexpected (and uninvited) events your way. A friend moving houses, a family gathering (brrr!), a heartbroken best friend who needs a shoulder to cry on, a pipe that decides to burst and transform your apartment into a swimming pool.
Say goodbye to your blogging time!

sucky life

#4 Social media

I spend so much time reading everyone’s tweets that I would have time to write 4 reviews a day if I signed off.

#5 Insomnia

Can you write more than two sentences that actually make sense without a decent amount of hours of sleep per week? I discovered I cannot. This is the main reason why I haven’t posted any reviews or interesting posts recently. Someone just knock me out for the night please.

zombie on prozac.gif

I wake up feeling like a zombie on prozac. I make it through breakfast with only one eye open. I slouch on the couch with my textbooks with all the good will I am capable of. And then there’s a blank. The onset of a headache sends me to the kitchen for a tea. As much as I love tea and consider it the best beverage on Earth, its effect on a zombie are limited. Before I know it, it’s 7pm and hubby is back for his well-deserved dinner. I haven’t studied, written, or done anything a human would usually do on their waking hours. I barely handle a conversation (please don’t use complicated words that require a dictionary, like “pepperoni” or “cooking time” at this stage or you will only get a blank stare from me). When the night comes, I pray for Sandman to invite me to his little house for a nice chat and a Sex on The Beach. Instead, I make stupid lists and wait for my poor couple of hours of rest.

#6 Chores

Cooking. Cleaning. Grocery shopping. Showering. Walking. My God, those take an awful amount of hours in the day.

#7 Work

The most time-consuming activity of all times.

#8 TV ShowsΒ

They are evil. Those moving images have the magical power to hold my attention and make me lose track of time. I blink and suddenly I’ve lost four hours because I really wanted to know if Lorelai was really going to marry BIIIP. What starts as a “just one episode” always ends up with “oops, it’s dark outside, the fridge is empty and bedtime was two hours ago.”

#9 Hubby

Hubbies, just like plants, demand a lot of attention, liters of water beer coffee and if the mood is right, a bit of talking.

married life.gif

This list is not a list of complaints. I am currently happy to be a dog mom, take showers and have awesome TV shows to save me from boredom when I can’t read. I only wish there were more hours in the day!

What keeps you away from blogging? Do you always stick to your schedule? What is your secret? Do share and I will send you a waffle!

Note: our regular post format and content will resume tomorrow. In the meantime, I thought a little fun post would be a great way to spend a scorching day alone at home.

  1. I can’t cook anything other than Italian food, so I’ll take you up on the offer of a waffle. πŸ˜‚ Actually, waffles sound amazing right now. I haven’t had a good one in years. My cooking consists of frozen things in boxes, food you can make in the microwave or toaster oven, or meals that I can call on the phone and order. I hate cooking. What I hate most is cleaning the dishes afterward. And while I’m at it, I need a maid. Except I refuse to pay someone to do work I can do myself. This post is so funny. I love it. Hubby = watered plant. Haha! They are a pain aren’t they? I was trying to watch hockey tonight, and he was all annoyed I wasn’t talking to him. I was like I’m in the zone, go away. I’m such a crank. He fell asleep so that worked out. I don’t have pets or kids to distract me just a fiancΓ© who complains when I don’t pat him on the head and say hi like he’s a dog. Haha! I’m so bad lately. I’ve been writing so much that I don’t even watch tv anymore. I have so many shows I’m behind on. I started writing more posts this week, but the last two weeks I’ve taken more time off for my fiction writing. Ooh, I have something exciting to tell you that happened today, and it has to do with publishing my second book. I’ll DM you on Twitter. πŸ€— Awesome post! Love all the pics.

    1. I love cooking. Wish I could send you my dishes πŸ˜€ But once I’m done, I usually have lost my appetite, so hubby has to eat it all himself. It’s annoying to spend hours cooking and baking when you don’t enjoy the food in the end. I love to order but most restaurants use ingredients I can’t eat so I can’t do it often. Oh gosh, cleaning the dishes is my nightmare. Fortunately, hubby does it for me πŸ˜€ Yes! Maids and a butler, that would be cool. Hubby is worse than the dogs. When he’s home, he wants us to do all things together, which is nice. For two hours. Then I want to do my own things, so I need to find a way to keep him distracted. I live with a kid who doesn’t know what to do if left on his own! GET AWAY FROM WP AND WRITE πŸ˜€ I read your message and it got me all excited over breakfast, haha!

      1. Haha! No dishes! I get the same way. I never feel like eating after I’m done cooking. My mom does that, too. I thought it was just a weird family thing. I guess not. Cooking takes all the fun out of eating for me. You’re lucky. I wish mine did the dishes. He just makes the mess. And when he cleans them, he does a horrible job. Two hours sounds about right. Then, I’m like okay, you need to go find something to do so I can read or write. He’s so annoying when I read. He’s always leaning over to see what’s on my iPad. Get a hobby, dude. I’m working on the manuscript now. She said she can have it back to me by June 25th. That’s not bad considering it’s over 85k words. Fingers crossed.

          1. I have a hubby nursery. It’s called the beach house. He’s down in Maryland and I’m in Pennsylvania working on my book. I don’t talk to anyone when I’m in the zone, so he went without me. The good news is I’m almost ready to send to my editor and and the story rocks. Yay!

  2. Great list! I relate to this a lot. I especially struggle with #’s 1, 2, 3 & 5! I suffer insomnia and it just makes me feel so laggy and drained in the morning and I don’t know how to put posts together when I’m reading that. I also am really a slow reader so I feel like reviews on my blog are very sparse, haha.

    1. We should start an Booksomniac group, haha! I am so mad when the lack of sleep prevents me from writing, it is so frustrating because I have the time and the will, but no energy –‘

        1. If I find the remedy, I’ll let you know! Maybe a magic potion would work, haha. It annoys me so much because I don’t even like to sleep, I find it to be a total waste of time. But apparently my body disagrees and my brain refuses to get to work without it!

  3. I found that scheduling posts helps a lot which is why I don’t take part in memes that requires me to work on the post on the day itself anymore (like WWW). I usually choose a day out of the week, usually Friday or Saturday, to queue my posts for the next week. πŸ™‚

    1. I wish I could do the same! πŸ™‚ But I can only manage a couple of hours here and there and writing takes me so much time and brain cells that I could never write them all one after the other. I might try when university starts because I will have less time to sandwich blogging between two other activities.

  4. This post is awesome! πŸ˜‚ All you mentioned applies to me as well. Seriously, ALL of it! With #9 being at home until September now, I think that might even be my biggest reason. He’s such an attention whore ^^

    1. Thank you! πŸ˜€ Good luck with your plant πŸ˜‚ The Playstation, grocery shopping, his TV shows and rugby games always help me when I need him to be quiet and leave me alone!

  5. When I first started my blog last November, my goal was to write a book review and post it every other day. I usually read about three books a week, so didn’t think that would be a big deal. Since then, I have also started writing a book, which cuts in to my blog writing time. I started a new job, which has a lot more entertaining in the evenings than my old one, and of course my husband deserves a conversation every once in awhile, as well as my dog Nash. He’ll nose my IPad out of my lap if I don’t pay him enough attention. I am still on schedule, but usually write the upcoming week in one day on the weekend… I love blogging, but may need to reset my goals for myself. Lol.

    1. I wish there were a magic spell to make it all fit in one day! I really need to try to write all of my posts on a specific day once I’ll get rid of my insomnia. I have a couple of blogger friends who work on their books and they say it is hard to find the right balance between blogging and writing. Good luck with the book πŸ™‚ I love how dogs ask for attention, but I can never resist, that’s the problem! Hubby is not happy with this post because he believes he is low maintenance, haha!

  6. Great post, feels all too familiar some. I’m lucky I don’t have problems sleeping.. au contraire, I need a lot of sleep really, 9 hours ideally. I usually write my posts for the following week on Sunday afternoon and I try not to use the computer for the rest of the week (except at work of course as it’s my job). So I only read (way too many) blog posts from others and my books during the work week.

    1. Wow, I don’t think I ever slept for 9 hours! Your scheduling sounds good, I never have enough time to write and read posts the same day. Plus, it leaves more hours for reading, something I could really do with!

  7. I love this post. I can relate especially to work( I work from 8am to 5pm and then go for Masters classes from 5:30pm to 8:30pm). TV shows is another weakness too lol. I try and schedule as much as possible especially when I get the time/mood for writing.Awesome post, thanks for the laughs πŸ™‚

    1. My pleasure πŸ˜€ I figured I was certainly not the only one struggling to balance it all and it would be fun to let go of the pressure with a gif post! That’s a pretty hectic schedule you have here! Are you a robot? haha!

    1. I know, they are ridiculously adorable πŸ˜€
It’s getting on my nerves, I had planned lots of blogging this weekend and I got a cold Friday evening, so I’ve been in bed trying not to die or drink too much tea with rum. I want to bloooooooog

  8. Haha this is such a great post! Life can really get in the way of blogging! I’m barely able to post lately, and I’m not even on Twitter much. TV Shows and chores take up so much time. I also sleep A LOT, so let’s include that, and I’m really bad at scheduling posts too haha. But it’s all okay Donna! We won’t hold it against you πŸ™‚ We enjoy reading your posts, so whenever you have time, we’ll be more than happy to read what you post.

    1. Thank you so much! πŸ™‚ I have been having so much fun blogging that I find it so frustrating not to be able to stick to my original schedule. I had decided this weekend would be blogging-only. Of course, I caught a cold on Friday evening so my plans were compromised and now I’m hiding in bed. Sleep a little for me, would you? haha!

    1. I am so still blaming you for me binge-watching Gilmore Girls xD I’m up to season 4 now! Today was supposed to be devoted to scheduling posts. So obviously, I’m on the couch with a tea/rum mix and eating one episode at a time πŸ˜€

      1. Hahaha you’ll be done with all the episodes in no time and then you won’t know what to do with yourself. I am still so eager to find out who is your favourite guy for Rory by the end.

  9. I’ve opted to stop doing chores so I have more reading time πŸ™‚ It’s one of the advantages to living alone, no one cares if the house is over run with dust bunnies. I know the feeling when it comes to animals. I have a cat who likes to chew the laptop cable.

  10. Love this post! I relate to this so much, especially #5. I don’t think I have insomnia, but I wake up a lot in the night – I never get a good night’s sleep and I’m always like a zombie. This is probably the reason I only post once a week haha! I can’t speak and make sense let alone write and make sense. And pesky old work is the worst – it gets in the way of everything fun! With the insomnia – do you ever find blogging makes it hard to sleep? Because I tend to find that if I write a blog post before I go to bed, I will lie awake for most of the night as I can’t switch my brain off.

    1. Sleep, or the lack of, is such a pain! I forgot what a good night of sleep feels like. I’m glad I’m not the only zombie πŸ˜€ Zombies are terrible at blogging! I know the problem. Often, I get all too excited about a post I’ve written, scheduled or just planned and I keep thinking about it. I also get lots of post ideas while waiting for sleep to come, but once I’ve got one, I need to think even more about it and there’s no rest in sight! My brain doesn’t have an offswitch.

      1. Mine doesn’t have an off switch either 😦 I also come up with ideas just before I go to sleep, and then they go round and round in my head all night – it’s like I’m blogging in my sleep sometimes haha. And I know exactly what you mean about forgetting what a good night of sleep feels like – I haven’t had one in so long! Nice to meet a fellow zombie πŸ™‚

        1. Last night, I woke up at 4am because my brain noticed I had forgotten to say something in the review that was scheduled for today, haha! I was dreaming and suddenly I was typing on my phone xD It’s crazy!
One day, we’ll have our army of zombie bloggers!

  11. Oh I know, I need more hours in the day as well! Every time I think ‘It’s fine, I’ll have more time this week’ I realise that I’m lying to myself. There’s always something that comes up! Damn you, Life of the Semi-Responsible Adult! *shakes fist*

I have the same problem you have with your dogs with my cat πŸ˜€ It’s so hard to write or plot anything when she’s meowing at me with those huge eyes, or slowly pushing my notebook out of my lap so that she can sleep. I don’t *really* mind because she’s adorable and owns me, but I can’t get things done that way.

    1. Animals are evil creatures πŸ™‚ but the worst is we can’t resist them. And the list of things to do gets longer and longer! Right now, I am trying to finish the review of a book I really loved that needs to be published tomorrow. Thanks to life and insomnia, I have waited until the last minute to do it, now I’m in panic-mode!

    1. Cats have a special way of distracting you πŸ™‚ Mine used to find every possible stupid thing to do to force me to stop doing what I was doing and play with him instead.
