I am taking a break in commenting and reading all the Wednesday post to inform you of a very important change in my life. (You can’t know this because I am typing, but I am using my most formal voice right now)
This morning, I received confirmation my wish has been granted! For my final year as an undergraduate, I will be majoring in English!
This is a huge step for me. If you were around when I started blogging, you might remember changing majors was among the goals I was hoping to achieve in 2016. Now that it is happening, I don’t know how I feel (I stopped jumping on the couch only a few minutes ago), but I wanted to share it with you.
For the story, my former degree involved both the English and the Japanese languages, the emphasis being on Japanese and a series of minors such as Law and Economy. It was fine until I realized my passion for the English language was only getting bigger and the only time I was really happy to study was when I was working on it. It is quite uncommon for a student to be allowed to change majors for their final year at university. At least in France. This is why I am celebrating today!
Before I get all excited again and run out the door to let the world know about this big news, I wanted to say thank you to all the bloggers who have been extremely supportive and nice to me. It can be difficult not being an English native speaker in a community where the majority of people are, but you have never make me feel out of place, and your kind words dismissed the insecurity I felt sometimes. So, I am sending virtual hugs as a token of my appreciation. I am aware waffles would have had a greater effect, but I have yet to find a way to send food through WordPress.
CONGRAAAAAATS ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

As someone who is English, studied English at university and taught English as a foreign language, I can confidently say your English is flawless and you should feel incredibly confident using it. And if anyone ever tries to tell you otherwise, send them to see me 😉
P.S. Incredibly impressed by the Japanese! I always feel quite pleased with speaking Spanish until someone tells me they’re fluent in Arabic/Russian/Chinese/any other non-Roman alphabet language. I have a friend who is fluent in Hebrew, Russian, Spanish and English! Amazing stuff!

Waw, that means a lot to me, thank you so much! 😘 I had stopped grinning but oops, it’s back, haha!
I studied Russian in high school. Well, I can’t really say I studied it. The teacher would come to class completely drunk and make us sing Russian songs. Japanese is not so hard once you get the gist of the writing and informal/formal speech.

Félicitations ! Wonderful news, I’m very happy for you ! Wow, you’re really great at languages then, Japanese must be so difficult.

Merci beaucoup! 🙂 It feels so weird to write in French here, haha! Japanese can be really fun. It’s not so difficult once you grasp the basic rules. And the writing is cool, but takes a bit of practice. xx

Japanese must have been cool though, I always wanted to learn but I’ve never committed the time to it. I listen to a lot of japanese music and watch a lot of tv shows and movies in japanese and have a basic understanding of the language but I don’t know what it all means 😛

Well now I’m sure your Japanese is better than mine, haha! I gave up completely when I came back from Kyoto two years ago. I remember more than I thought I would but it’s slowly fading away. I loved watching Japanese dramas.

From what I can understand, once you’ve figured out the basics of how the language works, which I do have a good understanding of, then it’s not actually too hard of a language to learn. I’m just so lazy though 😛

Exactly, once you get the gist, it’s fairly easy. But it doesn’t get along with laziness, haha! I remember studying kanji all through New Year’s Eve two years in a row.

What kind of work does being an English major entail?
I majored in English as well (in America) but that’s short for English Language Arts and Literature. Is this the major you’re switching to? If so, congrats! Because going to school to read a bunch of amazing books and getting to write about them and discuss them is a dream. I do miss it sometimes.

It is a bit different when it’s a second language, but there are similarities. We do get two literature courses, US and British. I can’t wait to get the list of books we’re going to study! Two history courses, US and British. A French class to help us stop making mistakes during translation. Lots of translating hours, and a bit of pronunciation and spoken language work. We also choose a specialty, such as translation or teaching, which adds a few more hours in the week.

That’s so cool. I love the specialty options!
Your English is excellent so you’re going to do very well. 🙂
